Arizona Drought Level Reaches Highest Category Since 2022

The recent dry spell in Arizona has led to a portion of Mohave County being classified as in an “exceptional drought” – a designation not seen in the state since August 2022. Most of Arizona is currently experiencing extreme or severe drought conditions, with the exceptional drought area highlighted in maroon on the map. This rare classification is highlighted by a timeline showing instances of exceptional drought in Arizona since 2000, with a peak of 76% of the state in exceptional drought in December 2020.

While the current drought is not as widespread as in previous years, the need for rain and snow to alleviate the dry conditions is urgent. There is hope on the horizon, however, as a potential rain and snow storm is forecasted for the middle to end of next week.
