The 5th Annual Black Canyon Donkey Derby, a unique competition where participants run alongside donkeys, will take place on March 8th in Arizona. The event dates back to mining times when two miners raced each other to the claims office with their gold loaded on a donkey. This has become a popular summer heritage sport in Colorado and a beloved local tradition in Arizona.
During the race, one person is paired with one donkey through a 3, 6, or 9-mile course. Spectators are invited to attend for free and enjoy local vendors and food trucks. Those interested in participating can sign up but must bring their own donkey. Proceeds from the event will benefit local donkey rescues.
