Arizona’s biggest electric companies show enthusiasm for nuclear energy

Arizona’s three largest electric utilities – Arizona Public Service, Tucson Electric Power, and Salt River Project – have announced plans to collaborate on exploring the potential of bringing more nuclear power to the state. In a joint statement, the companies highlighted the need for reliable, carbon-free energy to address Arizona’s growing energy demands. TEP President and CEO Susan Gray emphasized the importance of new nuclear generation in supporting economic growth and achieving a cleaner energy future. The companies intend to evaluate different types of nuclear power sources, ranging from small modular reactors to large-scale reactors, as well as potential locations for these plants, including retired coal-fire plant sites. While Arizona currently has one traditional nuclear plant – the Palo Verde Generating Station – the companies are eager to assess the feasibility of expanding nuclear power capabilities in the state. The initiative is part of a broader effort to meet Arizona’s energy needs sustainably while reducing carbon emissions.
