New developments in microelectronics technologies expected to revolutionize industry


Los Alamos National Laboratory is leading a project to revolutionize how integrated circuits are designed and manufactured, with a focus on energy efficiency and operation in extreme environments. The Nano Solutions On-Chip project (NSOC) will deploy nanoscale semiconductors like quantum dots, which can use both electrons and photons as information carriers. This allows for more efficient manufacturing processes and the creation of complex three-dimensional structures. The project will also study radiation effects to meet requirements for space, defense, and nuclear security applications.

NSOC is part of the larger Microelectronics Science Research Center (MSRC) called CHIME, which aims to make transformative advancements in extreme-environment electronics. CHIME will focus on developing resilient and effective devices for challenging conditions, including extreme thermal and radiation environments. New Mexico national laboratories, including Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories, will play pivotal roles in addressing Department of Energy goals for microelectronics.

The CHIME center will bridge the gap between laboratory research and scalable, manufacturable solutions. Institutions partnering with Los Alamos National Laboratory in NSOC include the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Duke University, and Sandia National Laboratories. The establishment of CHIME and another MSRC focused on energy efficiency demonstrates New Mexico’s leadership in cutting-edge technology and innovation. This project marks a significant advancement in the development of integrated circuits and could have profound implications for national security and industrial applications.
