Law enforcement agencies in Arizona have been left stunned after large portions of their RICO funds were taken by the State. The issue arose when Attorney General Kris Mayes informed law enforcement agencies that her office would be taking portions of each department’s Anti-Racketeering Revolving Funds to balance the state budget. The AARF funds, collected from criminals, are used to support law enforcement agencies in various ways to combat crime.
In response to Mayes’ actions, Governor Katie Hobbs’ office called the actions illegal and stated that the impacted agencies should have been informed of a plan to replenish the funds. Law enforcement agencies such as the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the Tucson Police Department saw significant losses as a result of the fund withdrawals. Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb condemned the actions, referring to it as theft and criticizing the state’s financial management.
The lack of communication between the Governor’s office and the Attorney General’s office has raised concerns among law enforcement officials about the future of their budgets. Sheriff Lamb expressed uncertainty about the future of his department’s funding and questioned whether more of their budgets would be at risk in the future.
