Proposal to raise Arizona teacher salaries through ballot measure

Proposition 123, a key source of funding for Arizona public schools, is set to expire in June with no clear extension in sight. Democrats and Republicans in the state both agree that an extension is necessary, but disagree on the details of where the funding should go.

Republican lawmakers have introduced a ballot measure to create a statewide program to increase teacher base pay through Prop 123, citing a teacher shortage crisis. However, Democrats are pushing for all school staff to receive fair compensation, not just teachers.

If Prop 123 expires, lawmakers plan to backfill the funding from the General Fund while working on an extension. Republican State Senator J.D. Mesnard emphasizes the importance of taking the time to get it right.

The Senate version of the ballot measure had its first reading on Thursday. Both sides are hopeful that a compromise can be reached to ensure that Arizona’s schools continue to receive the necessary funding.
