ADOT introduces I-10 electronic rest area signs for truckers

The Arizona Department of Transportation has launched a new Truck Parking Availability System to help truck drivers find rest area parking in real time along the western and southeastern segments of Arizona. The $2.8 million program is part of a larger project aimed at improving travel safety and efficiency for truck drivers in four states. The electronic signs provide information on more than 550 parking spaces along Interstate 10, with notifications also available through a third-party source.

A poll conducted by the I-10 Corridor Coalition found that 78% of truck drivers spend more than 30 minutes looking for rest area parking. In response, ADOT is planning to add 842 parking spaces across Arizona’s highway system, including expansions at rest areas along the I-10. The long-term plan is based on a final report expected in November 2023.

In addition to the Truck Parking Availability System, ADOT has expanded parking at two rest areas since 2019 and is working on major freeway projects, such as the I-10 Broadway Curve Project, scheduled for completion in 2025.
