Pima County, Arizona – Following the recent scandal involving the former treasurer of Santa Cruz County, Pima County’s government is taking proactive steps to protect taxpayer dollars. Pima County Administrator Jan Lesher has sent a memo to the Board of Supervisors outlining measures to strengthen oversight and prevent similar incidents.
Lesher consulted with the County’s Financial Director and Treasurer Chris Ackerley to develop recommendations for increased audit procedures and transparency. These recommendations include conducting periodic independent audits of the Treasurer’s systems to ensure compliance and accuracy, as well as providing the Auditor General direct access to financial institution statements.
The goal is to establish a routine board agenda item where the Treasurer reports on financial activities, reconciliations, and audit findings to the Board of Supervisors. Both County Supervisors Matt Heinz and Adelita Grijalva expressed support for the recommendations, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding taxpayer funds.
The scandal in Santa Cruz County involved former Treasurer Elizabeth Gutfahr, who is being sued by the County for allegedly embezzling over $39 million. The FBI is currently investigating the case. Lesher expects the new recommendations to be implemented before the end of the year.
