Trump ally easily wins special House primary to fill vacant Florida seat

State Sen. Randy Fine easily won a special House primary in northwest Florida after receiving endorsements from President Trump and House Republican leaders. Fine will fill a vacant, deep-red seat previously held by former Rep. Mike Waltz, who resigned to become Trump’s national security adviser. Fine is expected to win the special general election against Democratic nominee Josh Weil, as Waltz carried the seat by 33 points in 2024. House Republicans are looking forward to the special election to replace Fine, as adding more members would give them breathing room in the closely divided chamber.

In another special House primary on the same day, Trump endorsed state Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis to replace former Rep. Matt Gaetz in the Florida Panhandle. Gaetz resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use, with the House Ethics Committee finding substantial evidence of violations. The district is also heavily Republican, with Gaetz winning by 30-plus points in past elections. Polls for this primary closed later in the evening, and Trump’s endorsement signals his continuing influence in Republican politics. These elections are crucial for both parties in maintaining or shifting the balance of power in the House of Representatives.
