Maria Elena Cruz Becomes First Latina Justice Appointed to Arizona Supreme Court by Hobbs


Gov. Katie Hobbs has appointed Judge Maria Elena Cruz as the first Latina and first Black high court justice in Arizona’s history. Cruz, a Yuma County Democrat with 15 years of judicial experience, was chosen for her bipartisan support and dedication to serving the communities she works in. She emphasized the importance of fairness and impartiality in her role as a justice. Cruz’s family joined her as she was introduced as the newest member of the Arizona Supreme Court.
