California utility reports increase in power line current on day of Eaton Fire

High-voltage power lines experienced a surge in electrical current in the area where the Eaton Fire started, following a “fault” on a line elsewhere in the transmission network, according to Southern California Edison. The fault occurred several miles away and was detected just minutes before the fire was reported in Eaton Canyon. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, videos showing flames near the utility’s electrical towers have sparked negligence and wrongful death lawsuits. The utility did de-energize power lines serving homes in the area before the fire started, but transmission lines in Eaton Canyon were not shut off due to their ability to withstand heavy winds.

New video footage from a gas station surveillance camera near the fire showed electrical arcing from a transmission tower and flames shortly after. Southern California Edison is reviewing the footage to assess any connection to the fire. The utility is preserving materials at the scene of the towers as requested by lawsuits, but some plaintiffs are asking for transmission lines to be lowered for inspection, which is challenging due to the terrain.

At least 29 people have died in wildfires in the Los Angeles area this month, with the Eaton Fire burning over 14,000 acres. The fire is now 99% contained. Southern California Edison stated they are committed to supporting the communities impacted by the fires. The utility did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ongoing investigations and lawsuits related to the Eaton Fire.
