Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the ambush killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, Brian Thompson, was not insured by the company, according to UnitedHealth Group. Mangione, 26, is accused of fatally shooting Thompson in New York City on December 4 as he was walking to an investor conference. Police Chief Joseph Kenny stated that Mangione may have targeted UnitedHealthcare because of its size as the fifth-largest corporation in America.
Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania and found with a gun, silencer, a handwritten document referencing the health care industry, and a notebook that mentioned targeting a CEO. Social media posts suggested Mangione had back pain, and police believe the killing was planned and targeted.
Authorities have linked the gun found with Mangione to the shell casings from the crime scene, identifying it as a homemade “ghost gun.” Mangione faces charges of weapons possession, forgery, and others in Pennsylvania and is fighting extradition to New York. He is expected to be charged with murder in Thompson’s killing once he is brought to New York.
Mangione’s attorney has indicated that he will plead not guilty to all charges. The investigation into Thompson’s killing is ongoing, and more details may emerge as the case progresses. Thompson’s death has sparked concerns about workplace safety and security, especially for executives of large corporations like UnitedHealthcare.
