3,700 People Return to Malibu After Fire, But Fire Official Warns of ‘A Lot of Work’ Ahead

California firefighters made good progress in containing the Franklin Fire in Malibu thanks to cooler weather. Over 3,000 residents have been allowed to return home as the fire, which has burned over 4,000 acres and destroyed homes, was 30% contained on Thursday night. The fire, which broke out near a tunnel in Malibu Canyon, forced celebrities like Dick Van Dyke and Cher to evacuate. While some roads have reopened, around 1,600 residents remained under evacuation orders. Six residential structures have been destroyed and one damaged, along with other minor structures. More than 1,700 firefighting personnel and 16 helicopters were assigned to the fire, dropping water and fire retardant over the Santa Monica Mountains.

Facing red flag warnings earlier in the week, the fire was fueled by strong winds and dry conditions. Cooler weather has allowed firefighters to make progress, despite the challenging topography. On the ground, the newly formed Community Fire Brigade is aiding in firefighting efforts and advocating for fire preparedness in the community. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and while progress has been made, the work is not done. The incident commander emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of residents before allowing them to return home. Evacuees, like newlyweds Michelle and Blake Geffen, have suffered significant loss, with their rental home and all belongings destroyed in the fire. Despite the devastation, community members are coming together to support one another and rebuild.
