New UNC coach hired: Bill Belichick, the mastermind behind six Super Bowl victories with the Patriots

The North Carolina Tar Heels have hired former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick as their new head coach, signing him to a five-year contract pending approval by the University’s Board of Trustees and Board of Governors. Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl winner, coached the Patriots from 2000 to 2023 and is second on the NFL’s all-time coaching wins list with 333 victories. Belichick expressed excitement about coaching in college, citing his upbringing around college football. UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham welcomed Belichick, emphasizing the need for new and innovative thinking in college athletics. Belichick replaces Mack Brown, who was fired after a six-season tenure with a record of 43-33. The Tar Heels have not won a conference championship since 1980 and last appeared in the ACC championship game in 2022.

Belichick began his coaching career as an assistant with the Baltimore Colts in 1975 and has since held various coaching positions, including a successful tenure as the Giants’ defensive coordinator. He had a brief and unsuccessful stint as head coach of the Cleveland Browns before joining the Patriots, where he won six Super Bowls but experienced a decline in recent years after parting ways with quarterback Tom Brady.

In January, Belichick interviewed for the head coaching position with the Atlanta Falcons but was not selected. His hiring by North Carolina marks a new chapter in his coaching career, bringing his wealth of experience and success to the collegiate level.
