Foster care advocate disputes assertion that Rep. Nancy Mace was ‘physically accosted’

Foster care advocate Elliott Hinkle is challenging Rep. Nancy Mace’s account of being physically accosted by James McIntyre at an event celebrating the Foster Care Independence Act’s anniversary. Hinkle, who witnessed the interaction, described it as a normal conversation where McIntyre simply advocated for trans youth. However, Capitol Police later arrested McIntyre after Mace reported feeling intimidated and physically harmed during the interaction. Mace refused medical assistance but later shared images of herself in a sling and made social media posts about the incident. Mace has been criticized for having McIntyre arrested after telling foster youth the event was a safe space while accusing him of assault. She also introduced a measure to restrict the use of facilities by transgender individuals in response to the election of Sarah McBride as the first openly transgender member of Congress. McIntyre pleaded not guilty to charges of assaulting a government official and was released with conditions to stay away from Mace. The incident has raised questions about Mace’s handling of the situation and the treatment of advocates for marginalized groups within Congress.
