Cheetah and Mountain Lion Among Animals Affected by Bird Flu Outbreak at Arizona Zoo – Sacramento Bee

An outbreak of bird flu at an Arizona zoo has resulted in the deaths of several animals, including a cheetah and a mountain lion. The H5N8 strain of avian influenza swept through the Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary in Prescott, infecting a variety of species. The zoo staff reported that the outbreak began in the bird enclosures and quickly spread to other animals, despite efforts to contain it.

The cheetah and mountain lion were among the most severely affected, with both succumbing to the virus. The sanctuary’s director, Pam Gallo, expressed her deep sadness over the loss of these animals, stating that they will be deeply missed by both staff and visitors.

The remaining animals at the zoo are being closely monitored for any signs of the virus, and additional measures have been put in place to prevent further spread. The sanctuary has also reached out to local authorities and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for guidance on handling the outbreak.

The zoo is currently closed to the public as the staff works to contain the virus and ensure the health and safety of the remaining animals. Visitors are encouraged to check the sanctuary’s website for updates on when it will reopen.
