14 individuals indicted for theft of wildlife and animal cruelty in Arizona

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced on Thursday that a grand jury has indicted 14 individuals for poaching wildlife in the state. The group faces charges of conspiracy, illegal enterprise, theft, and animal cruelty related to the illegal poaching of bighorn sheep, elk, pronghorn antelope, deer, javelina, and turkey between 2018 and 2021 in Maricopa, Yavapai, and Coconino counties. The crimes resulted in a loss of over $200,000 to the state.

The AG’s office emphasized that poaching negatively impacts wildlife management, habitat conservation, and outdoor recreational opportunities in Arizona. Operation Game Thief, a hotline for reporting poaching violations, is being promoted to encourage the public to report suspicious activity.

One specific incident listed in the indictment involves two defendants, Ree Ree and Tee Reh, allegedly killing a deer by smashing its head with a rock, leading to a charge of animal cruelty. The defendants’ names and details about the case were provided, but four names were redacted for unknown reasons.

State officials urge anyone with information on poaching to contact the hotline at 1-800-352-0700.
