Early Sunday morning, a woman died following an explosion and fire at a home in Wakefield, Massachusetts. The Wakefield Fire Department responded to multiple 911 calls reporting the incident at 318 Water Street. Heavy smoke and fire were coming from the third floor of the six-family dwelling. Firefighters and police officers rescued two adult residents from the third floor, with one man taken to the hospital with serious injuries, while the female resident was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The Fire Chief expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, calling it a sad day for them and the community. Nearby residents were praying for a better outcome, with witnesses seeing first responders attempting to save the woman on the front lawn. An investigation indicated the fire was not intentionally set, but smoking materials and home oxygen equipment were found in the area where it started.
The fire was contained in about 30 minutes with the assistance of neighboring departments. Displaced residents are receiving help from The Red Cross and Wakefield Office of Emergency Management. Fire officials emphasized the dangers of smoking near home oxygen, as it can easily fuel a fire. The community is coming together in support of those affected by the tragic incident.
