Arizona State University football has been awarded a bye in the College Football Playoff and will play in the Peach Bowl as the No. 4 seed. This marks their first appearance in the College Football Playoff. They will face the winner of the first-round matchup between Texas Longhorns and Clemson Tigers. ASU moved up to the No. 4 seed after defeating Iowa State in the Big 12 championship game. The Sun Devils have a 0-1 record against Texas and have never played against Clemson. The game will take place on Jan. 1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The College Football Playoff rankings revealed Oregon as the No. 1 seed, Georgia as the No. 2 seed, and Texas as the No. 3 seed. The new field is made up of the five highest-ranked conference champions and the next seven highest-ranked schools. The top four conference champions receive byes into the quarterfinals. Boise State received the No. 3 seed and a bye into the Fiesta Bowl. The first-round matchups will take place on Dec. 20-21 on the campuses of the higher-ranked teams.
