The 12-team College Football Playoff bracket was unveiled, with Oregon, Georgia, Boise State, and Arizona State earning top-four seeds and first-round byes. The selection committee chose the five highest-ranked conference champions and seven at-large teams. Only the top four conference champions were eligible for top-four seeds and byes. SMU was included as an at-large team despite losing in the ACC championship game, while Alabama was left out.
The top seeds were determined after Oregon won the Big Ten, Georgia won the SEC, Arizona State took the Big 12, and Boise State won the Mountain West. The first round will be played on Dec. 20-21 at the home stadiums of the higher-seeded at-large teams, with matchups including Clemson at Texas, Indiana at Notre Dame, SMU at Penn State, and Tennessee at Ohio State.
The quarterfinals will be hosted at the Fiesta Bowl, Rose Bowl, Peach Bowl, and Sugar Bowl on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. The semifinals will take place on Jan. 9-10 at the Cotton Bowl and Orange Bowl, with the championship game on Jan. 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Overall, the playoff expanded to 12 teams this season, with a mix of conference champions and at-large teams making up the bracket. The path to the national championship will include multiple rounds of games, leading up to the final showdown in Atlanta.
