Jamaican-born Kalisha Dixon has been elected as a council member for the town of Bladensburg, Maryland, after winning on a Democratic ticket. Dixon’s victory was backed by her church and community who campaigned vigorously on her behalf. Despite her upbringing in the gritty inner-city community of Grants Pen, Dixon never had ambitions in politics but is now focused on serving her community and empowering youth through initiatives like bringing a trade school and youth club to Bladensburg.
Dixon, who has a background in public health and urban sustainability, is currently completing her Master’s degree and actively supports various ministries in her community. She credits her success to her faith in God and the support of mentors along the way. Despite her desire to give back to her hometown in Jamaica, Dixon has been unable to due to a threatening experience in the past.
While reflecting on her journey, Dixon encourages others to persevere and overcome challenges, emphasizing the importance of faith and mentorship in achieving goals. She plans to prioritize the needs of the youth in Bladensburg and hopes to make a positive impact on their lives through education and empowerment initiatives.
