A pair of Dorothy’s ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in “The Wizard of Oz” sold at auction for $32.5 million, making them the most valuable movie memorabilia ever sold at auction. The slippers are one of four surviving pairs from the 1939 movie and were once stolen but recovered by the FBI. The auction also included other items from the movie, such as the hat worn by the Wicked Witch which sold for $2.9 million. The slippers were stolen in 2005 by Terry Jon Martin and recovered in a sting operation in 2018. Martin confessed to the crime and was sentenced to time served due to poor health. The shoes were returned to their original owner Michael Shaw, who loaned them to the museum for the auction. The Judy Garland Museum was among the bidders but did not win the slippers. Despite efforts from the museum and donations from the City of Grand Rapids and Minnesota lawmakers to help win the auction, the slippers were ultimately sold to another buyer.
