Maryland Democrats, state Sen. Sarah K. Elfreth and Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr., despite their secured victories in the primary elections, are continuing to raise and spend money at a rapid pace. Both candidates have raised over $200,000 in the last three months, with Elfreth raising over $2 million and Olszewski raising over $1.3 million overall. Despite Maryland’s eight congressional seats being largely non-competitive, incumbents like U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin are still raising substantial amounts of money for their campaigns.
In the upcoming election, campaign finance reports reveal that Elfreth and Olszewski have a significant financial advantage over their challengers. Raskin, for example, reported raising $907,000 in just three months and has over $4.9 million in his campaign war chest. In comparison, Elfreth’s Republican opponent, Rob Steinberger, only has $5,300 in his campaign fund as of Sept. 30. Olszewski, on the other hand, is heavily favored to win over Republican Kim Klacik, who raised and spent considerably less this election cycle.
In other districts, incumbents like U.S. Rep. Andy Harris and U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer have also raised substantial amounts, with Hoyer contributing to various Democratic committees and candidates. The 6th District race to replace U.S. Rep. David Trone has garnered attention for the significant amount of money being spent by both candidates, though a recent poll shows the Republican candidate, Neil C. Parrott, leading in the race. Despite concerns from some Democrats, election forecasters still rate the race as “likely Democratic.”
