Black leaders urge Black males to vote on Election Day

A group of elected officials and community leaders gathered outside the State House for a mini-rally urging Black men to make their voices heard in the upcoming election. The event, organized by Win With Black Men, aimed to rally support for Black women candidates, including Vice President Kamala Harris and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. Howard County Executive Calvin Ball Jr. emphasized the importance of supporting these candidates for the future of economic prosperity, home ownership, and education.
As election day approached, candidates from both parties held last-minute events to drum up support. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., with voters required to go to their assigned precincts. Marylanders can register and vote on the same day by providing proof of residency. Early voting saw nearly 1 million in-person ballots cast and over 600,000 mail-in ballots returned.
Voters who have not returned their mail-in ballots can do so by mail or at drop boxes until 8 p.m. on election day. Despite the high turnout, patience is advised for election results, with League of Women Voters Executive Director Nikki Tyree cautioning against jumping to conclusions about tight races.
The event by Win With Black Men aimed to encourage Black men to be more involved in the political process, with Maryland State Director Kevin Ford Jr. leading the charge. Gov. Wes Moore highlighted the historic potential of having two Black women serving in the Senate simultaneously if Alsobrooks wins her race. The message of the event was clear: Black men supporting Black women candidates is crucial for the future.
