In a fortunate turn of events, technology averted a potential tragedy on the railway tracks in Rourkela, Bhubaneswar. A herd of 28 elephants, including calves, was detected by an artificial intelligence (AI)-based thermal camera while they were crossing the Bandhamunda-Barsuan railway track, a common route for goods trains. The camera immediately sent location details and photographs to the forest department and railways control room. Acting swiftly, the railways delayed a goods train by 30 minutes to allow the elephants to safely cross the track.
Divisional Forest Officer Jasobant Sethi commended the quick action taken by both departments, highlighting the importance of coordination to ensure the elephants’ safety. The elephants, known to shuttle between Sana Parbat reserve forest and Tainsar under Panposh range, were able to cross the track without any harm.
This incident underscores the significance of technology in preventing wildlife tragedies on railway tracks. Prem Kumar Jha, principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife), mentioned the installation of a high-resolution AI camera on a tower to monitor elephant movements. This successful use of technology follows previous installations in Similipal Tiger Reserve, aiding in the arrest of poachers.
The collaboration between the forest department and railways, along with the implementation of advanced technology, showcases a proactive approach to safeguarding wildlife and preventing fatalities on railway tracks. As technology continues to evolve, such initiatives hold promise for reducing human-wildlife conflict and preserving endangered species.
