African Immigrant Community in Maryland Demands Political Representation
The African immigrant population in Maryland, representing 17% of the state’s immigrants, has been organizing and demanding more political representation. With about 900,000 members, this community is the fourth largest in the United States. At a recent fundraiser in Bowie, the fusion of African and American cultures was evident, showcasing traditional Nigerian cuisine alongside American dishes.
Guests at the fundraiser, including Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, paid $500 to support the mayor’s reelection campaign. Mayor Scott emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration between native-born Americans and immigrants. The city of Baltimore has seen a significant decrease in homicides and shootings, which has led to increased support for the mayor’s public safety policies.
African immigrants in Maryland are advocating for greater cultural awareness, educational support, and community engagement to address their specific needs. The Democratic Party has started targeting this emerging voting bloc, but data on immigrant participation in the electoral process remains unclear. Chukwunonso “Vincent” Iweanoge, who chairs the Governor’s Commission on African Affairs, is leading an apolitical campaign to engage eligible African voters.
Despite challenges like mistrust in politicians, community leaders like Iweanoge are determined to educate and empower the African immigrant community for greater political influence in shaping Maryland’s future. The community believes in moving forward together and emphasizing unity to go far in the political landscape.
