Black women experience over a 1% increase in unemployment rate in November

[ad_1]
In November, the overall unemployment rate in the United States increased slightly to 4.2%, with some groups seeing more significant rises in joblessness than others. Black women experienced a sharp increase in unemployment, with their jobless rate jumping from 4.9% to 6%. This rise was more pronounced compared to white women, whose unemployment rate only ticked up slightly to 3.4%. Black workers as a whole had the highest unemployment rate at 6.4%, with Black men at 6% and white men at 3.5%.

The overall labor force participation rate decreased to 62.5%, with Black women seeing a decline to 62.3% from 62.6% the previous month. Black men also experienced a decrease in labor force participation to 68.7% from 69.3%.

Kevin Rinz from the Washington Center for Equitable Growth noted that these figures demonstrate a cooling labor market that is still relatively strong historically, but is struggling to provide gains for marginalized workers post-pandemic. He emphasized the volatility in month-to-month data.

Hispanic men also saw a rise in unemployment in November, with their jobless rate climbing to 4.4% from 4% in October. The data suggests a challenging job market for marginalized groups, particularly for Black women who experienced a significant increase in unemployment last month.
