A recent YouGov survey explored how Americans perceive media coverage of 16 celebrities, including former child stars such as Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan, and whether they feel celebrity coverage has become more or less fair in the past 20 years. The survey found that Spears, Lohan, and Michael Jackson were seen as having received mostly negative coverage, while Ryan Gosling was viewed most positively.
There were also gender differences in perceptions of media coverage, with men more likely to see certain celebrities positively, such as Taylor Swift and Janet Jackson. Women were more likely to perceive negative coverage of Lohan and Spears.
Overall, Americans believe that coverage of celebrities has become less fair in the past 20 years, with 27% saying it has gotten worse and 18% saying it has improved. People aged 30-44 were especially likely to believe that coverage has become less fair.
The survey sampled 1,122 U.S. adult citizens and was conducted online from November 26 – December 3, 2024. The results were weighted to be representative of the U.S. population in terms of gender, age, race, education, and other factors. The margin of error for the sample was approximately 4%.
