Yuma nonprofit, the Inspire Hi Project, is helping children with disabilities have more inclusive playtime this Christmas by donating switch-adapted toys. These toys are modified to help children with complex motor needs have easier access to play and participate in games they otherwise couldn’t. By adding a switch or button to traditional toys, children can activate them using parts of their body that are their strengths, such as a hand, finger, or elbow.
The nonprofit was started by board members Rebecca Gettings and Alexis Liggett, who both have children with complex motor skills and understand the importance of inclusion and learning through play. They saw a need in their community as adapted toys are often only found in larger cities like Phoenix and can be expensive to purchase online.
Their goal is to ensure that every child in Yuma county has access to toys that are suitable for their needs. So far, they have provided about 80 toys to local children. The Inspire Hi Project is making a significant impact on the lives of children with disabilities in Yuma by helping them develop learning skills through play.
