The Duluth City Council is set to vote on Madden Media becoming their next tourism marketer, following a blind ranking process that saw the Arizona-based company emerge as the top choice out of 26 competitors. Three of the five finalists were local companies but were ultimately not selected. Concerns were raised about potential conflicts of interest due to Madden Media marketing for competing cities, but CEO Dan Janes assured the council that they would not pursue work in areas where a conflict exists. Despite local company AimClear’s belief that a Duluth-based firm would do a better job, Madden Media emphasized their experience in the travel industry and commitment to building trust in the community. Councilor Mike Mayou inquired about the potential for local staffing, while Council President Roz Randorf asked about measuring success over the next two years. Madden Media aims to exceed the national average increase in travel industry numbers during their tenure as Duluth’s tourism marketer. The decision will be made next week by the council.
