Former President Donald Trump expressed confidence in his pick to run the Pentagon, former Fox News host Pete Hegseth. Trump defended Hegseth’s track record and his commitment to the military during an interview with Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press.” Despite allegations of excessive drinking and abuse of women, Trump remained supportive of Hegseth’s nomination.
However, NBC News reported that Hegseth’s nomination was in jeopardy, with as many as six Senate Republicans hesitant to support him. Concerns over his drinking habits and allegations of sexual misconduct were highlighted in reports from Fox News colleagues and a police report from California in 2017.
Hegseth, an Army National Guard veteran, has denied the allegations and has been taking meetings on Capitol Hill to reassure senators and the president-elect. Trump defended Hegseth, praising his intelligence and military background, while also saying that many senators have expressed support for his nomination.
Additionally, Trump addressed concerns about Hegseth’s drinking, stating that he has spoken to people who know him well and they have said he does not have a drinking problem. Despite this, doubts remain about whether Hegseth can be confirmed, as some senators are still unsure about supporting his nomination.
Overall, Trump expressed confidence in Hegseth but acknowledged the challenges ahead in getting him confirmed as the head of the Pentagon.
