3 Technologies Excluded from the 10 Breakthrough Technologies of 2025 List

Three innovative technologies that were considered for inclusion on the 2025 list but ultimately left off are virtual power plants, useful AI agents, and eVTOLs. Virtual power plants are systems that combine various technologies to generate and store power, allowing for more efficient management of energy across the grid. While around 500 virtual power plants are currently operational in the US, more would need to be implemented to have a significant impact on the grid. AI agents, which can perform tasks online on behalf of users, are gaining traction, but challenges remain in understanding user requests and reliably carrying out actions. Lastly, eVTOLs, or electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, are like electric helicopters that may one day transport commuters and visitors. While these technologies may not have made the cut for the list this year, they are still worth keeping an eye on for future developments in the tech world.
