In a surprising turn of events, Western Maryland Republicans are clarifying that they never truly wanted to secede from the state, despite proposing the idea three years ago. The proposal to join neighboring West Virginia was more of a protest against being overlooked in a heavily Democratic state, particularly in U.S. House elections where they feel outvoted by suburban Montgomery County.
Now, with a pivotal opportunity in the upcoming Nov. 5 election, Western Maryland counties of Garrett, Allegany, and Washington are looking to elect one of their own to represent them in the 6th Congressional District. The retirement of incumbent Democrat David Trone has opened the door for a tight race between Democrat April McClain Delaney and Republican Neil Parrott.
Analysts predict a tight contest that could determine which party gains control of the House, with Parrott currently leading in the polls. The election has taken on significance for Western Maryland, as they have not had a candidate from the region win in the 6th Congressional District for over 50 years.
Despite previous flirtations with the idea of secession, Western Maryland lawmakers now focus on electing a representative who can understand their unique needs and values. The upcoming election will test if their hopes for representation will finally be realized in a district that has historically favored Democrats.
