Tsunami Advisories in California and Oregon Cancelled Following 7.0-Magnitude Earthquake

[ad_1]
A magnitude-7.0 earthquake hit off the coast of California on Thursday morning, leading to a tsunami warning for Northern California and southern Oregon that was later canceled. The epicenter was located about 62 miles west of Ferndale, California. Humboldt County, the closest community on land to the quake, reported damage such as broken water mains and windows, as well as houses dislodged from their foundations. About 10,000 people were left without power in the county. This quake was just one of at least 17 seismic events that affected Northern California that day, with the majority of activity centered around Humboldt County. California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared an emergency to aid in the response efforts. The USGS Earthquake Science Center director noted that the earthquake was shallow and warned of potential large aftershocks. There is a 5% chance of a magnitude 6.0 quake in the same area within the next week. Strike-slip earthquakes, like this one, occur when two plates slide past each other. Tsunamis can result from earthquakes displacing the seafloor, prompting warning of coastal flooding. Despite the initial concerns, no injuries or deaths were reported.
