South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s party is opposing efforts to impeach him after his failed attempt to impose martial law in the country. The Defense Minister, Kim Yong-hyun, responsible for the chaos during the martial law period, has resigned and been succeeded by Choi Byung-hyuk, a retired army general. Opposition lawmakers plan to vote on the impeachment motion on Saturday, although it is unclear if members of Yoon’s People Power Party will show up for the vote. The motion requires a two-thirds majority to pass, and if successful, Yoon’s powers will temporarily be transferred to the Prime Minister until a decision is reached by the Constitutional Court within 180 days.
The U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, Kurt Campbell, expressed surprise and disapproval over Yoon’s decision to declare martial law, stating that the unity among progressives and conservatives against the order shows the strength of South Korean democracy. The U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, emphasized the importance of the situation playing out peacefully and in accordance with the rule of law. Protests and public outrage have followed Yoon’s martial law declaration, with calls for his resignation intensifying. The opposition bloc, along with some members of Yoon’s party, are pushing for his impeachment, which could lead to a trial in the Constitutional Court to determine the outcome.
