The University of Arizona’s African American Student Affairs (AASA) office unveiled a new mural celebrating Black student life on campus. Designed with input from students like Ky’Jah Greene, the mural reflects the joy and sense of community experienced by Black students in the AASA space. Director Jamaica DelMar highlighted the incorporation of Tucson’s landscape elements and traditional African fabrics in the design. The mural also honors past students who advocated for the creation of the AASA office in 1989. Artist Nolan Patterson involved the community in the process, including a quote at the top of the mural: “To choose joy is to find freedom.” Attendees were invited to leave their handprints on the mural, symbolizing their contribution to the artwork. Greene emphasized the importance of the mural in recognizing Black joy on campus and bringing attention to the presence and contributions of Black students. The mural is located at the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Center in Tucson, Arizona.
