UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed by a masked gunman in front of a New York City hotel. The shell casings found at the scene had the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” written on them. Thompson was targeted in a premeditated attack as he was walking to an investor conference. Despite known threats against him, Thompson did not have personal security with him at the time of the shooting. The motive of the gunman is unknown, and they are still at large.
Security video showed the gunman approaching Thompson from behind and opening fire. Thompson was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The gunman purchased items from a nearby Starbucks before the shooting, which were later collected by police as evidence. Former FBI supervisor Rob D’Amico suggested it may have been a personal vendetta related to Thompson’s company.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to determine the motive behind the shooting. UnitedHealthcare does not provide personal security to its executives, unlike some of their competitors. The shooting has raised concerns about executive security and the ease with which high-ranking business figures can be located online. Despite the lack of personal security for executives, UnitedHealth Group is cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation of Thompson’s murder.
