Commanders leadership holds meeting with Maryland legislators in response to ongoing push for stadium in DC

The Washington Commanders’ leadership, including principal owner Josh Harris and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, met with Maryland Senators and other legislators on Monday to discuss the potential relocation of the team to a new stadium at the RFK site in Washington, D.C. The team is currently based in Landover, Maryland. There is a pending bill, House Resolution 4984, which would give control of the RFK site to D.C. and grant the Commanders the option to build a new stadium there. Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is expected to bring the bill to a vote in the Senate, but Senators from Maryland are seeking assurances from the Commanders about the future of the Northwest Stadium site if the team were to move. Maryland Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin want guarantees that the community around RFK will benefit from any potential development. The Commanders have not commented on ongoing negotiations, but Van Hollen expects a plan from the team soon. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Maryland Governor Wes Moor have not provided comment on the bill, which also includes discussions about transferring the D.C. Air National Guard’s squadron to Maryland. Van Hollen says the transfer is not directly related to the RFK conversation. As the legislative session winds down, all parties involved are working towards a resolution that satisfies both the team’s needs and the concerns of Maryland legislators and local communities.
