York County, located just north of the Mason-Dixon Line, offered a more tranquil lifestyle and a lower cost of living. The political landscape in Pennsylvania, which leans Republican, was a better fit for Carter, a Democrat.
York County, known for its strong support for Trump, has become a battleground area in presidential elections. With a population of over 460,000, the county delivered Trump his largest margin of victory in Pennsylvania in 2020. Despite challenges like poverty and crime, the county remains predominantly Republican, with every countywide elected official being a member of the party except for one.
Many Maryland expats, like Carter, commute to work in Baltimore, with over 25,000 people from York County traveling to Maryland for work. Some, like Jim Rommel, a retired Baltimore police officer, decided to move to York County for a quieter lifestyle and more affordable housing. Rommel, a Trump supporter, appreciates the calm and safety of the area compared to Baltimore.
On the other hand, Mike Loban, a retired teacher from Baltimore, has been actively campaigning for Democratic candidates in Pennsylvania. With the state being a swing state and politically significant in national elections, volunteers from Maryland have been focusing their efforts on canvassing in York County to help influence statewide and national outcomes. As the stakes remain high, the battle for votes in York County continues to draw attention from both parties.
