5 Important Congressional Races in Maryland to Keep an Eye on During Election Night

Tuesday’s Election Day could spell significant shifts in congressional control, as both the Senate and House of Representatives hang in the balance. With Democrats holding a slim majority in the Senate and Republicans needing just five seats to flip the House, the outcome is uncertain. Experts like Kris Miler from the University of Maryland warn that control of both chambers will come down to a nail-biting finish.

In the Senate, Maryland’s open seat is a closely watched race, with former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan and Democrat Angela Alsobrooks facing off. Alsobrooks, a Black woman, could make history by becoming Maryland’s first female senator. Meanwhile, in the House, there are 26 tossup contests, many in districts won by Biden in 2020 but currently represented by Republicans.

In key Senate races to watch, Ohio sees Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown facing off against Republican Bernie Moreno. Arizona’s open seat has Republican Kari Lake against Democrat Ruben Gallego. Wisconsin’s Democrat incumbent Tammy Baldwin is up against Republican Eric Hovde. And in the House, Michigan’s 7th District has Democrat Curtis Hertel against Republican Tom Barrett, while New York’s 22nd District has incumbent Republican Brandon Williams facing Democrat John Mannion.

The outcome of these races will determine the balance of power in Congress and influence the direction of key policy issues. As Election Day arrives, all eyes will be on the tight contests to see how they shape the future of governance in the United States.
