Trump made gains in every county of traditionally Democratic Maryland.

President-elect Donald Trump did better in Maryland’s 23 counties and Baltimore City compared to 2020, following a national trend of Trump gaining vote shares. Early data suggests that fewer Democrats came out to support Vice President Kamala Harris than President Joe Biden, narrowing Trump’s gap in the state from a 33% loss in 2020 to 23% this year. Trump gained ground in every Maryland county, with three flipping to him since 2020.

The largest shift towards Trump was seen in Cecil County, where he performed 8 points better than in 2020. Trump also flipped Talbot and Kent counties on the Eastern Shore, with smaller shifts in other counties. Many voters cited concerns about the economy, immigration, and foreign policy as reasons to back Trump, despite hesitations about his temperament.

Some voters, like Jerome Cannon, a Democrat who supports abortion rights, expressed concerns about Harris’s ability to represent America on a global stage. Despite voting in favor of reproductive rights, some, like Meredith Hillyer, did not support Harris. Through Wednesday afternoon, there were roughly 551,000 fewer votes counted than in 2020. The full results are expected in the coming days, with mail-in and provisional ballots yet to be counted.
