Senator Bill Hagerty of the GOP believes that access to the U.S. economy is a ‘privilege’ amidst looming Trump tariff threats.

Sen. Bill Hagerty expressed his support for President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on countries like Canada and Mexico, citing the use of trade as a strategic tool by the U.S. for decades. He asserted that access to the U.S. economy is a privilege and emphasized the need to scrutinize countries that do not have America’s best interests at heart. Hagerty backed Trump’s threats of tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico due to concerns about illegal activity such as fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration.

In response to Trump’s tariff proposals, Sen. Chris Murphy criticized them as a distraction from creating American jobs and accused Trump of using tariffs to benefit his cabinet and their associates. Hagerty defended Trump’s picks for cabinet positions, including Kash Patel for the FBI and Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence, despite concerns about their experience and associations.

Hagerty supported Patel’s ability to reform the FBI, citing problems within the agency that require significant changes. He dismissed concerns about Gabbard’s meeting with Syrian President Assad and accusations of parroting Russian propaganda, stating that he plans to vote for her nomination regardless. Despite some pushback, Hagerty expressed his loyalty and support for Trump’s nominees and strategies for using tariffs as a tool in international trade.
