Gus Malzahn has made the decision to step down as head coach of Central Florida and join Florida State as the offensive coordinator, according to a source familiar with the hire. This move is pending a state background check and has not yet been confirmed by the Seminoles. Malzahn has been with UCF for the past four seasons, leading them through a transition to the Big 12 Conference. However, with a record of 4-8 this season, the Knights have announced his departure following a loss to Utah.
Malzahn, who previously coached at Auburn, will be taking over for Alex Atkins, who was fired in November after a dismal season for the Seminoles. Florida State has struggled with a 2-9 record this season, a significant drop from their 13-1 record and ACC championship win last year. The team currently ranks near the bottom in total offense and scoring offense.
UCF had a challenging season under Malzahn, with quarterback issues and a 2-7 conference record. This was the program’s worst season since going 0-12 in 2015 under former coach George O’Leary. In response to their struggles, Florida State coach Mike Norvell has made changes to his coaching staff, firing Atkins, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller, and receivers coach Ron Dugans.
Malzahn’s move to Florida State marks a new chapter in his coaching career, bringing his experience and expertise to a program in need of a turnaround. The Seminoles will be looking to Malzahn to help revitalize their offense and improve their performance in the upcoming seasons.
