Possible salmonella contamination prompts recall of cucumbers in 26 states

SunFed, an Arizona produce company, is recalling all sizes of its fresh American cucumbers in 26 states and parts of Canada due to potential salmonella contamination. The cucumbers were sold from Oct. 12 to Nov. 26 and distributed in bulk cardboard containers marked with the SunFed label, as well as in generic white boxes or black plastic crates with stickers naming the grower. The produce was distributed in 26 states and parts of Canada, including Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. SunFed is working closely with authorities to determine the cause of the contamination.

Consumers are advised to check if their cucumbers match those that were recalled and to avoid consuming or distributing any suspicious produce. They are urged to throw out the recalled products. Earlier in the year, cucumbers were also recalled in South Florida after at least 551 people were likely sickened by salmonella and 155 hospitalized. Many of the recalled cucumbers were linked to Bedner Growers Inc. and Thomas Produce Co. of Palm Beach County; however, Thomas denied direct connection to the issue.

Salmonella infections are estimated to cause about 1.35 million illnesses in the United States each year. SunFed President Craig Slate emphasized that the company is taking immediate action to protect consumers and is working closely with authorities and the implicated ranch to address the contamination issue.
