National food waste nonprofit ReFED estimates that more than 315 million pounds of food will be thrown away this Thanksgiving, contributing to the 40% of food that goes uneaten nationwide. In Phoenix, one solution to combat this waste is Recycled City, a food waste pick-up service that collects scraps from homes and businesses and turns them into compost. The compost is then used as fertilizer on a farm in Florence, with the vegetables grown there sold back to the compost customers. Founder JD Hill emphasizes the importance of meal prep and avoiding excess during the holidays to reduce food waste and its detrimental effects on the environment. Food waste in landfills produces methane gas, contributing to climate change. While all food is compostable, not all foods are safe to compost at home, and Phoenix offers composting programs to educate residents on best practices. By making conscious choices about consumption and disposal, individuals can make a positive impact on reducing food waste and its environmental consequences.
