Men’s Basketball Comes from Behind to Secure 85-82 Victory against New Mexico

The Sun Devil Men’s Basketball team advanced to the Acrisure Classic Championship game after a thrilling 85-82 victory over New Mexico. Arizona State, led by Basheer Jihad with 20 points, came back from a nine-point deficit late in the game. Freshman Joson Sanon contributed 19 points off the bench, helping secure the win. The team’s success under Coach Bobby Hurley was evident, as they outscored New Mexico 34-22 in the second half, hitting 20-of-25 free throws. The victory marked the team’s fourth non-conference tournament championship in the Hurley era. Arizona State moves to 6-1 for the season, with a comfortable lead in two-possession games and notable success in neutral settings. Freshman Jayden Quaintance surpassed the freshman single-season blocks record for the program. The team will face St. Mary’s in the championship game and continues to show strength in close games under Hurley’s leadership. Hurley recently signed an extension to remain with the program through the 2026 season.
