The Christmas season in New York City gets real with the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Center. Kelly Clarkson, musician and host of an NBC talk show, will host the ceremony and the television special “Christmas in Rockefeller Center.” The ceremony takes place on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, televised live on NBC and streamed on Peacock. The event will feature music stars and wrap up with the lighting of the tree.

The area around Rockefeller Center is public, but sightseers can buy tickets to be photographed with the tree in the background. VIP tickets are available for a closer view of the tree. More than 50,000 multicolor LED lights will adorn the tree, topped with a Swarovski star. Performances by the Backstreet Boys, Jennifer Hudson, Dan + Shay, Megan Hilty, Thalia, and the Radio City Rockettes are expected.

This year’s 74-foot tall Norway spruce tree is the first from Massachusetts since 1959, donated by Earl Albert in memory of his late wife. After the holidays, the tree will be donated to Habitat for Humanity to build homes for those in need. The lighting ceremony is a long-held tradition, with the first tree erected at Rockefeller Center in 1931.

After the event, the tree will be lit daily from 5 a.m. to midnight through mid-January, with special hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The tree lighting ceremony is a festive way to kick off the holiday season in New York City.
