The Arizona Department of Transportation has announced the upcoming closure of State Route 67 to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park on Monday, Dec. 2, due to anticipated heavy snowfall during the winter months. The 43-mile highway is known to receive over 9 feet of snow each season, prompting the closure for safety reasons. Drivers are advised to exercise caution this winter, with tips including driving carefully, respecting snowplows, and being prepared with a car safety kit and a full gas tank.
U.S. 89A will remain open at the junction with SR 67 in Jacob Lake, providing an alternative route for travelers. SR 67 is expected to reopen in mid-May, when access to the North Rim will be available again. Before embarking on any winter journeys, drivers are urged to check weather and road conditions, plan ahead, and inform someone of their travel plans in case of emergencies.
