SRP and EDPR NA Install 200MW BESS to Bolster Arizona’s Electric Grid Amid Surge in Demand

The Flatland Energy Storage Project, set to be operational in 2025, will see SRP, a major utility company in Arizona, take in surplus energy from the grid during low demand periods and discharge it during peak usage hours in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. The project is part of SRP’s Integrated System Plan to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. SRP’s Associate General Manager Bobby Olsen believes that battery energy storage is crucial in decarbonizing their portfolio and meeting the growing energy demand in the region. The project’s cost is estimated to be around $271 million, with additional investments in tax payments and job creation.

EDPR NA, a subsidiary of EDP Renewables, is leading the project in partnership with SRP. The Eleven Mile Solar Center in Pinal County, home to Arizona’s largest battery storage system, is another example of Arizona’s commitment to grid-scale energy storage. Arizona has made the top three states in grid-scale storage deployments. SRP and APS have also signed multiple energy storage agreements this year, reflecting the growing importance of energy storage in the state.
