The recent election results in the United States have left many liberals feeling disappointed, as a convicted felon was elected over a woman for a prominent position. Republicans also regained control of the Senate, while Democrats may still have a chance to flip the House. Despite these setbacks, there were some small victories for liberals in the election.
In North Carolina, Democrat Josh Stein won the governor’s race, becoming the state’s first Jewish governor. Democrat Sarah McBride made history by becoming the first openly transgender person to be elected to Congress, representing Delaware. Other wins included the approval of abortion rights amendments in several states, the election of Black women to the Senate in Maryland, and the election of Korean American Andy Kim to the Senate in New Jersey.
Fani Willis, the Fulton County district attorney who has been prosecuting Trump for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, was reelected. Monique Worrell also won her seat back as a state attorney in Florida, and the state of Washington voted to keep its Climate Commitment Act. In Illinois, voters approved measures for mandatory insurance coverage for IVF and a new tax bracket for high earners.
Overall, while the election results may have been disappointing for some, there were still significant victories for liberal candidates across the country.
